Bas Dost faints during AZ vs NEC: He's conscious and the match got suspended

Moments of panic in the Eredivisie. During the final minutes of AZ Alkmaar - NEC Nijmegen, Bas Dost collapsed in the middle of the field without having collided with any opponent or teammate but fortunately, minutes later, AZ reported that the striker was conscious.

The following reports came from the Netherlands saying, "After preventive resuscitation, Dost regained consciousness and was taken off the field".

Minutes later, the match was definitively suspended with 'voetbalprimeur.nl' reporting, "The match is now definitively stopped. It is not yet known when it will be resumed. This decision is taken by the KNVB in consultation with AZ, NEC and the local authorities. There was also a lot of excitement in the AFAS Stadium from the spectators of both clubs."

The immediate fear would have been cardiac problems, which have received widespread attention following the resumption of professional football after the Covid-19 pandemic although nothing suggests it is connected to vaccines.

Some high-profile cases include Marc Vivien Foe, Ugo Ehiogu, Fabrice Muamba and Sergio Aguero, whom have all had their careers cut short due to breathing and heart problems.

Bas Dost had scored in the game, grabbing the opener in the 11th minute from an unlikely angle worth just 0.01 expected goals according to FotMob.

With the match abandoned, PSV Eindhoven hold a five-point gap at the summit of the Netherlands' highest football league. PSV have been flawless in 2023/24, winning all 10 of their games and scoring 35 but conceding just five.

Alkmaar remain in second, having drawn just once, but they possess a game in hand over the league leaders which would allow them to close up to just two points provided they win a rematch against NEC.

NEC remain 12th out of 18 teams, with nine points. They're two above Volendam in the relegation play-off spot and they're four ahead of Ajax who are remarkably bottom of the table, although the Amsterdam club has two games in hand allowing them to climb as high as ninth theoretically.
